Pilsner Urquell

All over Europe you’ll find bars dedicated to one beer: the original pilsner, Pilsner Urquell.

Each is usually run by a Tapster. Someone who knows the beer, the ritual of pouring it, and the importance of getting it right. But the interesting part is often the person behind the tap.

This ongoing project for Pilsner Urquell has taken me to places such as Komárom, Tata and Budapest in Hungary, and Kraków, Tychy, Pszczyna and Warsaw in Poland.

The photographs are about more than the beer. They are about the people who care for it, the places they have built around it, and the small details that make each bar different.

Travelling from one place to another, meeting the Tapsters and spending time in their bars gives me the chance to look beyond the obvious. To understand what makes a place tick, and to tell its story through the people who are at the heart of it.
